Rising Beyond the Surface

I recently began exploring alcohol inks, which has forced me to approach painting in a whole new way. Since it is a thin, fast drying medium I can work quickly adding layer upon layer. At the same time, it is not as forgiving as oil paints and part of their charm is the airiness. So, many times, less is more and it is an exercise in restriction and subtraction. As I shed the heaviness of the last year, the lightness I feel is brought to life through the flow of the inks and the crazy vibrant colors produce.

Thalassa

16"x20" alcohol ink on canvas This piece started with a desire to work with cool colors to create a calming visual. But a completely serene painting was not materializing, as it turns out calm is not in my vocabulary these days, so painting about calmness was not.gonna.happen. Instead, there are areas of calm, undulating green-blues that are interrupted by saturated, deep blues that push & pull to the foreground and background creating turbulence. Turbulence similar to the sea or "thalassa."
