Room to Breathe

This series is an ongoing dialogue, between internal thoughts and emotions with the external forces that shape the world around us. As a woman, a mother, and an empathetic human in a world that feels increasingly inequitable and cruel, painting has become both a grounding practice and a means of self-discovery. It serves as a platform for asserting my identity, agency, and resilience amidst growing chaos.

As a female, I am filled with rage. How are we in a place where I have to worry about bodily autonomy and basic rights being taken away? As a mother of two girls my rage morphs into fear. How do I protect them? How do I teach them to be resilient and prepared? To take care of themselves while still helping those around them? This fear is then consumed by sadness. My heart hurts for all those who are suffering in ways I could never imagine. It hurts for mothers in war-torn regions who have to bury their children, and those innocent children themselves, whose lives are cut short.

These intense and sometimes contradicting emotions are represented through contrasting visual languages: bold colors, decisive lines, and dynamic movement embody the resiliency, defiance, and rage I could explode from on some days. In contrast, softer hues, diffused edges, and expansive compositions evoke the desire for tranquility and the feelings of mournfulness and helplessness that can feel all consuming on other days. Though deeply personal, these paintings aspire to create a shared space for contemplation, inviting viewers to pause, reflect, and find resonance within the universal human journey.
